About Alonna
Alonna Berry grew up in Milton and has seen how fast Sussex County has changed. In the midst of all the growth we've seen, Alonna has done work to make sure that the underrepresented population in Sussex County gets their say in Dover. This is her primary goal as state representative, but she has made a career out of it.
Before being elected in 2025, she worked in the office of John Carney in family services, health, equity, and education. She has also been a part of numerous projects, including leading multiple non-profits focused on community building, and previously served for two years in AmeriCorps.
Alonna lives in Milton with her husband and two sons.
Priorities & Accomplishments
Smart Development
Sussex County is one of the fastest growing areas on the entire US East Coast. With that growth, we need to be responsible and decisive. Before any new neighborhood or shopping center is built, we need to make sure it has the roads, sewers, storm drains, and electrical infrastructure to support it, as well as to not be burdensome on nearby residents and nature. Too often, the state has been playing catch-up on behalf of developers, when it should be their responsibility to pay for their own project's needs.
Quality Education
As a former educator and mother of two young sons, quality education is a personal issue for Alonna. She has advocated fo and secured higher teacher pay and pushed through the new equitable school funding formula that will fund our schools according to student needs, rather than on the property value surrounding the school.
Accessible Healthcare
Healthcare is too expensive and too inaccessible. Many Sussex County residents are required to travel to Northern Delaware or even further to see a specialist, or may choose to do so because of a shortage of healthcare professionals. To mitigate this, Alonna backed SB1, under which hospitals are required to spend more on primary care. She also sponsored a bill which will create more opportunities for physicians to create their own practices and re-introduce family medicine to Delaware, also introducing funds to support rural healthcare access.
Sustainable and Affordable Energy
Electrical costs are going crazy, and the tides are rising. This is an opportunity to bring clean energy to a state heavily reliant on natural gas. Alonna has advocated for wind and solar programs, both through community based efforts like home solar installation and larger scale projects that work with the fragile ecosystem of our community.
Affordable Housing
Thousands of houses have been built in Sussex County in the last few years, and they are expensive as ever. To ensure home ownership is still possible in Delaware, Alonna supports building more apartments and townhouses so that working families and young people are not priced out of their homes.
